On the first morning of our board's annual strategic planning retreat this week, I received the news that Michigan Minority Business Hall of Famer, Dr. William Pickard had passed away. Out of respect for his family, I refrained from sharing this information with our board until later in the evening. This was no simple feat as Dr. Pickard was a titan in business, a community leader, advocate, mentor, and a friend.
He truly embodied the essence of minority business certification. His dedication to building wealth extended beyond the business owner to employees, suppliers, and the entire ecosystem impacted by a business that is owned, managed, and controlled by a person of color. He tirelessly coached employees to success, preparing them for C-Suite roles and ownership. His companies consistently supported other minority suppliers with double-digit percentages of spending with certified MBEs, and he gave back generously to communities about which he cared. His generosity included mentoring and investing in countless other CEOs and leaders. He once told me that it was his goal to live up to the fundamental purpose of certification as he understood certified companies' vital responsibility in the community ecosystem. He was truly in a class all by himself.
Personally, I am deeply grateful for Dr. Pickard's unwavering support. On my first day in the office, he sent a beautiful bouquet welcoming me to Michigan. In the last few years, as our organization faced a significant challenge to our mission, he frequently checked on me and sent notes of encouragement and support. I remain humbled by his belief in me and continue to be inspired by all he taught me about standing up for the vital businesses we serve.
This week, our board reflected on his life as we worked through our retreat. His legacy inspired us to ensure that the strategies we implement drive our critical mission forward. I extend my deepest sympathy to his daughter, Mary, the rest of the family, and many friends. Our business ecosystem is profoundly grateful for the life and legacy of Dr. Pickard. Rest in power, dear sir. Your legacy truly speaks for itself!
