The MMSDC is proud to announce our partnership with the Wayne Center to give tangible hope to foster children in the Metro Detroit area this fall and winter. The MMSDC will be accepting donations of unused suitcases, luggage, duffel bags, backpacks, tote and conference bags of which will be donated to the Wayne Center to be used in their foster care program.
Did you know that Michigan ranks 18th in the country for the number of children, per capita, that are placed in out-of-home care? Each year approximately 7,400 children enter foster care for the first time, and on any given day in Michigan, approximately 13,000 children are in foster care or a residential placement due to abuse or neglect. (Wellspring Lutheran Services Foster Care, 2019)
Unfortunately, many of these children do not have a suitcase or duffel bag when they enter foster care, especially in emergency situations. They often have to bring whatever belongings they can fit into a plastic trash bag. Despite efforts to provide a stable family environment for each child, some children in foster care are moved several times before being reunited with their birth-families or before finding a forever family through legal guardianship and/or adoption.
It is our hope that by providing luggage and basic care items that these children are given hope, comfort, and a sense of dignity. We encourage you to challenge your coworkers, friends, and families to participate in this much-needed effort.
The MMSDC will be accepting your donations in honor of our outgoing Chairman, Tony Tomczak, now through Thursday, December 12th. Items can be dropped off at the MMSDC Detroit office at any time during normal business hours or brought to the 2019 MMSDC Chairman’s Scholarship Gala at DTE Headquarters on December 12th. We will make sure that all items are transported to a local foster child via our partnership with the Wayne Center.
If you would like to make a contribution but do not have luggage or bags to donate, cash donations towards the purchase of items will also be accepted.
Help us add to our growing collection, drop off your donations now.
